Organized crime or criminal organizations is a transnational grouping of highly centralized enterprises run by criminals for the purpose of engaging in illegal activity, most commonly for the purpose of generating a monetary profit. The Organized Crime Control Act (U.S., 1970) defines organized crime as "The unlawful activities of [...] a highly organized, disciplined association [...]".

Mafia is a term used to describe a number of criminal organizations around the world. The first organization to bear the label was the Sicilian Mafia based in Italy, known to its members as Cosa Nostra. In the United States, "the Mafia" generally refers to the American Mafia. Other powerful organizations described as mafias include the Russian Mafia, the Chinese Triads, the Albanian Mafia, Bosnian mafia, the Irish Mob, the Japanese Yakuza, the Neapolitan Camorra, the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta, the Indian Mafia, the Unione Corse, Serbian Mafia, and the Bulgarian mafia. There are also a number of localized mafia organizations around the world bearing no link to any specific racial background.

Some criminal organizations, such as terrorist organizations, are politically motivated (see VNSA). Gangs may become "disciplined" enough to be considered "organized". An organized gang or criminal set can also be referred to as a mob. The act of engaging in criminal activity as a structured group is referred to in the United States as racketeering.

What are significant topics to cover reguarding Organized Crime in the 1920s?
Q. I have to do a report on Organized Crime in the 1920s, and want to make sure I am as thorough as possible. If there are major organizations or facts I should cover, please list them, or sites where I could get more information. I'm not very familiar with this topic, so would appreciate any help I got. I also have to do a visual of some sort on it. If you have any ideas of what visual I could do, I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks a lot.

A. There were three major businesses involving organized crime in the 20's involving the mob 1) Bootlegging 2)Prostitution 3)Gambling to find facts about these things I recommend looking up some of the key players in the game at the time. Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, and The Purple Gang (Detroit) and if your looking for n on-mob members for bootlegging look up Joseph Kennedy.

social norms that are required in an organized crime group?
Q. Who actually determines the social norms that are required in an organized crime group? And do the norms differ from group to group? Why or why not?

A. Social norms are formed differently for every community due to varying sociocultural, political and historical factors. Organized crime are social groups like any other. Rituals and nuanced behavior are particularly essential to create and maintain a distinct group identity and engender feelings of pride and belonging. Thus traditions and norms are kept fiercely and are resistant to change, such that in many cases, even the hierarchical heads are unable to circumvent them, e.g. no one is above the rules and codes. This is done also to impart a sense of history, and authenticity to the group, sort of a 'bigger than all of us' mentality. Common recurring themes center on loyalty, like the Sicilian code of Omerta, or demonstrations of… [cont.]
