What is the difference between option on stock index and option on a stock index future?
Q. I understand what an option is. But what is the difference between option on the stock index and option on the stock index futures?
Asked by Joe Joseph - Thu Aug 6 04:52:37 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The difference is that an option on a stock index has the cash index as the underlying instrument. So, for the S&P 500 (SPX) options listed on the CBOE, the underlying instrument is the actual S&P 500 index, the one that gets quoted a lot on TV and in newspapers. These options are cash-settled. On the other hand, an option on a stock index future has the actual index futures contract as the underlying. So, for the options on the S&P 500 index futures (e.g. e-mini, ticker ES) that are listed on the CME, the underlying instrument is the e-mini futures contract. These options are either settled into cash (quaterly options) or into the nearst futures contract (serial options). For example, September options have the September futures contract… [cont.]

What is the difference between an ETF index fund and a regular index fund?
Q. Schwab has some new etf index funds (domestic and international) for clients that are transaction free and very low expenses...Are ETF index more risky than normal index funds ?

A. ETFs are less risky. With ETFs you can buy or sell right now at the current price. You can also put in stop and limit orders, just like with any stock. You know what's going on at all times and you know what your price is. With regular index funds, like with any traditional mutual fund, you buy or sell your shares based on the net asset value which is calculated at the end of the day after the market closes. That means that you put your order in, but you don't know the price until later. If there is a big move against you near the end of the trading day, you're screwed. If I were to put in an order now (Saturday) for a regular fund, it would be held until the market closes on Monday. If I were to put in an order on an ETF now (Satur [cont.]
